Conceptual design
Conceptual studies were made for Topo House to explore what a Children’s play space could look like if using topography as a driving force for play.
..we find that the most stimulating environments for us all, are parks. Open fields, paths over hills, sticks and rocks nearby, things to hang on, to climb, to sit or roll and where any kind of body can find its most comfortable position. Such a glorious freedom of movement is at the heart of Topo House.
Topo House uses topography as language for play. It allows for different vantage points, obstacles or opportunities and creates an environment much like a picnic in the park or an afternoon in a fort of blankets. There is a kind of nostalgia that blooms from ones own creative work. Watching kids create things from nothing much is a great pleasure, and an assurance to the resilience of heir future selves. All the elements are there, in the ground.
The ground undulates to create spaces above and beneath like a hillside or a cave. Kids slide down, hideaway, pretend to be foxes, read in a tucked away corner.
